Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology
CNN Style profiles the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Exhibition. When talking about the high-fashion apparel industry, the controversy of humans vs. machines is more prominent than ever. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute is opening an exhibit this spring titled Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. This interesting exhibition is trying to change the views of consumers and challenge visitor's perceptions. Breathtakingly avant garde pieces that may seem, "highly futuristic" are actually made entirely by hand, whereas vintage looking garments are in fact created using machines. The exhibition opened to the public on May 5th.
Since the creation of the sewing machine, the interloping relationship between the hand (manus) and machine (machina) has been an controversal in the garment production industry. Things that are made entirely by hand are perceived to be higher quality whereas machines are associated with ease and poor quality. Depicted in this upcoming exhibition, our view as a consumer might actually be flipped around.
